Happy Equinox to you dear friend! If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere like me, welcome to the glorious descent into Fall. And to all of my Southern Hemisphere friends, welcome to the bounty of Spring! Yesterday/today marked the shift in seasonality where the light of night and day are equal in number and even if one was not previously conscious of this shift, did you feel something? A change in the air perhaps?
There are so many different ways to be a Herbalist. Maybe you want to learn how to take care of your family and friends when flu season strikes. Perhaps your goal is to have a line of skincare products, herbal teas, or other planty preparations. Or you might be like me and want to be a Clinical Herbalist someday. No matter which path you choose, it is important that you have resources and education to help guide you along the way.
Blessed new moon and a bountiful Lammas to you! Has every day this week felt like a Friday to you? Or rather, has the entire month of July just felt like a big long drawn out week to you?? It has for me. But now we're here. August 1st. New Moon in Leo. The next turning of the wheel, one more step towards fall, and the beginning of the harvest season.
Every single person with ovaries who comes to me for help is struggling with at least one, if not a handful, of symptoms related to their cycle – from ovulation and menstruation pain, PMS, dysmenorrhea, PMDD, and fatigue to PCOS, endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, and so much more. And here’s the thing, your cycles should not be painful, marked with difficult symptoms, or cause significant interference with your daily life.
When it comes to herbalism, there are many different approaches, schools of thought, and materia medicas that vary from one tradition to the next. Every herbalist has a slightly different way of doing things…but one thing that I think we all can agree on is the importance of allyship with medicinal herbs and the ethical requirements of walking the plant path.
I’ve reopened my books for new clients and have just a few more spots available to work with you one-on-one this summer. Learn more about these offerings, my process, and if working together is right for you in this blog post.
Have I mentioned how much I love Yarrow? It is perhaps my favorite plant in my entire garden (don’t tell the other herbs that). Learn more about the extensive history of Yarrow in medicine and myth in this in-depth monograph on our dearest plant ally.
I do not mean to be pessimistic, but it seems that with every passing day we are confronted with an even more heartbreaking headline – states are stripping people with a uterus of their rights, climate catastrophe is imminent, violence in all of its forms seems to permeate every aspect of our modern existence and it is completely overwhelming. I cannot open my news tab on my phone or scroll on social media without experiencing a visceral reaction in my nervous system – anger, sadness, frustration, anxiety, and most of all…grief.
Blessed Beltane! Today marks the next turning of the wheel in the Celtic calendar – if Equinox/Ostara was the spark of springtime, the fire now blazes bright on this May day morning. I know very little about my ancestors long gone from this Earth, besides the basics of where they may have resided for some spans of time. One thing I know for certain though is that when I eat certain foods I feel such a sense of deep resonance...like I have eaten this meal countless times in many eras. As if it is part of the makeup of my very bones. The first spring Nettles are one of these foods for me.
