Weekly Tarotcast: 3/12-3/18
While I pull a card every day for myself, on Monday's I like to take a moment to check in with the general energy of the week. This short reading is intended to reveal insight for the collective consciousness, or the energies we as a unified society may experience in the coming week. The messages that you relate to are the messages you were meant to hear! If you are interested in expanding on how this energy will affect you in the coming week, I encourage you to book a three card reading so we can explore deeper.
The Hermit Reversed
Keywords: Isolation, Loneliness, Withdrawal
The Hermit is seen alone in the mountains with a light in his hand. In The Herbal Tarot, The Hermit holds this illuminated ball, which represents the six-pointed star seen in the traditional card. This star is the Seal of Solomon and symbolizes wisdom. We also see that the Hermit carrying a tall staff, symbolizing his emblem of power and authority, in his left hand, the side of the subconscious mind. Through isolation and self-study, the Hermit has attained mastery of himself and reached the peak of his spiritual quest, while acquiring all sorts of knowledge along the way. He is also seen wearing the grey cloak of invisibility – while his secrets aren't for everyone, he will share them to those willing to climb the metaphorical peaks to wisdom. The Hermit also corresponds to Virgo while the number 9 signifies accomplishment, wisdom, the search for truth, and attainment of one's goals. This card is all about making time for solitude to soul-search and find the answers of life within the self.
So what does it mean when the Hermit shows up in the reversed position? Well, there are a few ways to read a reversed card – 1) It may reflect a way in which you are out of balance; 2) The meanings of this card may be more of an internal influence rather than the result of your external environment; 3) It could present blocked energy in your life. Of course there are many other ways to interpret reversals, but these are a few of my go-tos when cards come up in the reversed position. Now let's consider each potential way that this card could relate to you this week:
1) Are you out of balance?
This card can go one of two ways - either you're not taking enough time to for self-reflection, or you are completely indulging yourself in solitude. If you resonate with the former, the Hermit encourages you to have some alone time to meditate, connect with your inner self, and reflect on what's going on in your life. He wants you to connect with your spiritual side. On Saturday we will have a New Moon in Pisces which presents a wonderful opportunity to engage in self-reflection. Use this time to serve your spiritual growth. Now, if you have holed yourself up like a literal Hermit and are spending all of your time in isolation – it's time to change things up. The Moon moves into Aquarius on Monday evening and will be hanging out there until early Thursday making this week a wonderful time to reconnect with friends and share those deeper truths you have uncovered about yourself.
2) Internal vs. External Influences
There are times in our lives where we all know we could use a little introspection or where solitude is unavoidable. These events can be triggered by experiences that we have like going through a big change, being presented with a new opportunity, moving to a new place and not knowing anyone, or maybe even your friend pointing out that you've been engaging in destructive behaviors and it's time to take a good hard look at yourself. These examples can of course vary, but they are all external influences. If this week you are feeling an internal need to be alone with your thoughts, listen to that message. Many people feel this way around the New Moon, I know that I do, and there is nothing wrong with taking some time to yourself. Especially if your subconscious is telling you to! Observe your innermost self this week and take note of the messages that come up. You'll be glad that you did.
3) Blocked Energies
In this case, the Hermit would signify that you have not been connecting to your spiritual side and its starting to show up in your life in negative ways. If you are a spiritual person, maybe life has gotten the best of you these last few weeks and you've fallen prey to being busy all day every day. It's okay, I have these times too. Even though I will do readings for people throughout the week, sometimes weeks will go by when I haven't pulled a single card for myself. It happens! The Hermit could be showing up this week to tell you that you have been blocking or even repressing your ability to tap into your subconscious mind and uncover your deepest truths. Our subconscious mind can empower us to live life with a sense of deep knowingness and inner strength. I get it, sometimes taking time to dive into the deepest parts of ourselves can be really daunting, but with this card and the New Moon this weekend, it is time to go there my friends. Embrace the message of the Hermit, go inward, and know that you can shine a light in even the darkest of places. (Am I the only one connecting the Hermit's lantern to the light of Eärendil’s star, given to Frodo by Galadriel??? Probably...)
As you can see, the Hermit reversed can mean different things depending on the current state of your life. The overall message is to take time for self-reflection but do it in a balanced way. Try this affirmation from The Spirit of Herbs by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin to help you embrace the message of the Hermit this week:
"With patience and inner quietude i follow the guidance of my own inner light."
